Background:
Sam Maes was born in Edegem, Belgium. He moved to Austria when he was 2 years old and started skiing instantly. In his early stages he was competing for the ski club of Zell am See. His mother had a big influence on how he skis today, because she took him for free skiing in many different ways. Sam studied at the gymnasium in Saalfelden for 9 years, of which 5 were on the ski program. Sam decided to ski for Belgium when he started racing FIS
